SSAT Courses Near Me

If you want your student to receive the best possible education, you might want to look into an SSAT course. The SSAT is a high-stakes test taken by students in grades 3-11 as part of the application process to private schools. It is divided into three levels (Elementary, Middle, and Upper) in order to provide an appropriate challenge to students of all ages. Veritas Prep offers an SSAT course to help students feel more prepared on exam day.

One of the many benefits of taking an SSAT course is the opportunity to develop a familiarity with the formatting of the exam. All levels of the SSAT contain three scored sections: Quantitative, Verbal, and Reading.

The Quantitative section is a math test assessing a student’s knowledge of age-appropriate concepts. For example, an elementary school student is expected to demonstrate basic arithmetic skills, while a high school student works with more complicated algebra and geometry problems. Questions are administered in two timed 30-minute intervals on the Middle and Upper level exams, while elementary students only have one 30-minute section. Calculators are not permitted.

The Verbal section of the SSAT assesses a student’s vocabulary skills. Questions include synonyms, antonyms, and analogies that increase in complexity for older students. Questions are again administered in two 30-minute intervals for middle and high school students, while elementary students only have one 30-minute section.

The Reading section of the SSAT measures a student’s reading comprehension skills, such as identifying the main idea and understanding supporting details. Passages are drawn from a variety of sources, including prose fiction, poetry, history, economics, and nonfiction. Elementary students have 30 minutes to answer 28 multiple-choice questions, while older students have 40 minutes to answer 40 questions.

The SSAT also includes two unscored sections. The Writing section requires students to compose an original piece of writing in response to the prompt provided. Elementary school students must write a story about what is happening in a picture with a beginning, middle, and end in 15 minutes. Older students have 25 minutes to compose a creative piece using one of two provided story starters. While this section isn’t scored, it is sent to schools as a writing sample with your application.

The other unscored section is Experimental and used by the test’s manufacturer for question research purposes. There is no need to specifically prepare for it.

At Veritas Prep, we take pride in offering an SSAT course that could help your student work toward their academic goals. Contact an academic advisor today for more information!
