Why take the GMAT?

The Graduate Management Admission Test, or GMAT, is a standardized exam that is commonly taken by individuals who are in the process of applying to schools offering an MBA program. You may be required to take a test like the GMAT before you can finalize your application at the business schools you're most interested in attending. A strong score on the GMAT could be a factor that may help you get accepted at the schools you apply to. That's because business schools often look at an applicant's GMAT score as a means of determining whether or not that individual would be successful at this academic level.

In that sense, you may take the GMAT as a means of completing your application process, with the hopes of improving your chances of admission, or for both of these reasons. Of course, getting a strong score on this exam can be a challenging thing to do without any guidance. That's why Veritas Prep offers a Scottsdale GMAT course along with several other GMAT preparation options. Keep reading for more information on this test and what we could do to help you study for it.

What's on the GMAT?

The GMAT has four test sections that you'll need to study. These sections are based on the skills of Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Integrated Reasoning, and Analytical Writing. You have some power to choose which order you take these test sections in, so be sure to consider the option that may be the best fit for you when you register to take your exam. In the following paragraphs, you'll find a breakdown of each of these sections and what you need to know while taking them.

Depending on the test order that you select, Analytical Writing may be the first part of your exam. You will be given 30 minutes to respond to one writing prompt in this section. After completion, you'll be given a grade that ranges from 0 to 6 based on a variety of factors. The structural and linguistic components of your essay will receive a computer-based score. Then, human evaluators will go over your writing to examine its quality, your ability to express your thoughts effectively, and the strength of the argument that you make.

If you sign up for something like a Scottsdale GMAT course, you can get help developing a strategy that you can utilize on this test section. Your instructor can spend some time showing you what an effective response looks like. They can help you develop your writing skills and give you sample prompts that you can respond to in order to get practice with the Analytical Writing test section. Get in touch with us today if you think you would benefit from taking a Scottsdale GMAT prep course.

Next, you may take the exam's Quantitative Reasoning section. This test section features 31 multiple-choice questions, which test-takers will have 62 minutes to answer. Your score on the Quantitative Reasoning section will range from 0 to 60. To perform well on this part of the test, you'll need to have strong problem solving and data sufficiency skills. You'll be asked to do things like identify relevant data and use logical reasoning and math skills to answer difficult questions.

The next part of the test focuses on Verbal Reasoning. Here, you'll be asked to answer 36 questions in 65 minutes. Again, this test section has a scoring scale that ranges from 0 to 60. On the Verbal Reasoning section, you'll need to demonstrate your skills in reading comprehension, critical reasoning, and sentence correction. This is another section where test-takers may benefit from working with a private test prep instructor.

Finally, the last section on the exam focuses on Integrated Reasoning. This test section features 12 questions that test-takers must answer within a 30-minute time limit. The work you do on this section will be graded on a scale from 1 to 8. To perform well, you'll need to demonstrate skills in graphics interpretation, table analysis, multi-source reasoning, and two-part analysis.

The GMAT is a challenging exam because doing well on it requires a variety of distinct academic skills. Each section's time limit also requires that test-takers complete their work efficiently or risk running out of time towards the end of a section. These factors can make the GMAT difficult to prepare for. However, you can get help studying for your upcoming exam when you contact us directly. We'd love to help you improve the quality of your study sessions.

Travis Morgan may be an actual movie producer (look him up on IMDB if you don’t believe us), but he certainly doesn’t fit the old cliché of “Hollywood types.”  In fact, Travis is a down-to-earth Veritas Prep instructor who is focused entirely on his GMAT students’ success. Having moved 5 times (!) before 6th grade, Travis now credits much of his career success to the skills he picked up early in life: adapting to new surroundings, new people, and new challenges.  It’s an expertise that he brings with him in his teaching methods.

A graduate of Brigham Young University (BA) and Northwestern-Kellogg (MBA), Travis’ goal as a teacher is to always meet students where they are now - how they think, what they see, the process they’re most comfortable with, and then try to open their eyes to a different approach, a new discovery, or a beneficial thought process. Here’s an example:  “I love to teach Sentence Correction. And even though about half of my students absolutely HATE Sentence Correction when they start, I show them that you don’t have to be an expert grammarian to do well on these problems. With a structured approach and a strategy called “Decision Points,” you can get the right answer with limited knowledge or even effort.”  And the biggest reward for Travis?  “I just love to see my students’ eyes light up when we teach this strategy and it completely transforms their entire view of these problems.”

Real reviews

My instructor, Travis Morgan, was phenomenal.
He was able to teach difficult concepts in simple ways so that everyone could understand.   Veritas Prep dissects the GMAT so that you know exactly what to expect and gives many helpful hints so that you know how to think like the test makers. The books that come with the course actually explain short cuts to doing the problems and walk you through step-by-step.  Seriously everyone in my class was very happy with the course and felt that it was well worth the money.

His classes were very dynamic
My instructor Travis Morgan (LA) was awesome!; he helped me to focus on effective strategies to tackle the GMAT! His classes were very dynamic and gave us advices out of the (material from his personal exprience as a test taker). My instructor and Veritas Prep are highly recomended!!

Special praise must be given to instructor Travis Morgan
whose upbeat personality kept me awake after a full day of work. Highly recommend

David Newland sees himself not simply as someone conveying information and content but as a coach as well. As he explains, “The students that I work with need more than knowledge, they need to be able to perform to the best of their abilities on test day and it is my pleasure to help them do it!” As a competitor both in athletics and debate his whole life, he could choose to focus on his own successes of which he’s had many, but David finds a greater pride and joy in learning of the triumphs of his students. He truly relishes hearing from students he’s worked with that they have gotten their goal score or into their dream program. So if you’re fortunate enough to work with David, please be sure to let him know when the same happens for you.

Despite all the accomplishments, David did suffered one somewhat traumatic blow early in life. “I put together a song and dance number for the third-grade school talent show and the music teacher required me to lip synch so that no one would have to hear me sing. My dreams of a music career were shattered.”

Born and raised in Independence, Missouri, David earned his JD from Michigan and MA and BA from Truman University and now enjoys living in the beauty of Vermont. In fact, inspired by the Green Mountain state’s quiet, open roads, he’s now considering getting a motorcycle so that he can drive very slowly on the deserted roads of the early mornings. Might just be a great chance to sing out loud as you go, David.

Could I have scored 700+ without David? Probably not
I paid for 28 hours of online tutoring with Veritas Prep. I was assigned David Newland as my instructor. It was the best money I could have spent. Within six weeks of working with David, I scored 770 and 760 on the GMAT Prep Software PP1 and PP2 tests. On the real exam I scored 700 (90%), comprising Quant 47 (73%) and Verbal 39 (88%). The drop between the PP tests and the real test was mostly due to nerves and bad time management on the day. Could I have scored 700+ without David? Probably not given I only had six weeks to prepare. David was excellent. With 8+ years of GMAT experience he knows how to solve every question the test can throw at you. He explained methodology in a clear and easy to apply fashion. He was also flexible and we could frequently schedule sessions on short notice.

This guy is smart and really knows the GMAT inside and out
Got so lucky to get David Newland as my instructor. I went into the course more confident in quant, and David is a verbal expert, specifically in Critical Reasoning. This guy is smart and really knows the GMAT inside and out, which was helpful since I had never taken the exam before. I could hear his voice inside my head as I did practice problems and during the actual GMAT.

David was excellent.
The instructor David was excellent. I found that he took the time to explain each section properly and in easy to understand language. I very much enjoyed this course and would recommend it to any one with a very hectic schedule.

Anthony Ritz: he’s really, really skilled at chess (he’s a U.S. Chess Federation-rated Expert), so unless you have some serious Gambit Game, we’d recommend you avoid facing him on the chessboard, and instead, take advantage of his exceptional math mind.  A native of Stone Mountain, Georgia, and a graduate of Georgia Tech and Georgetown Law, Anthony’s passionate about getting his students to the GMAT score they want.

“It’s great to be able to show people that math on the GMAT isn’t really about grinding harder or being a genius. It’s about understanding what’s really important and then combining that realization with a skill set that every prospective MBA student is capable of possessing. It’s exciting stuff!”

Anthony’s track record speaks for itself (he’s helped students lift their scores by as much as 230 points), and honestly -- he’s just a great guy.  But again, for the sake of your own self-esteem, ask him about his cats, talk to him about the Braves… but if you’re killing time with him between lessons, avoid the chessboard.

Anthony is a fantastic teacher!
Anthony is a fantastic teacher! He is not only great at getting the concepts across, but also changing the way you think about numbers and logic in general.  He changed the way I will add, subtract, and multiply for the rest of my life! You can tell by the way he talks and teaches that he genuinely cares about his students and our success.

He always went above and beyond
My instructor, Anthony Ritz, was absolutely amazing. He is very knowledgeable on the test material and takes pride in making sure each class member understands each problem type. He has an endless book of tricks that he is able to articulate in a very easy to remember way. I emailed and instant messaged him many times during the week, outside of class, and he was always quick to respond with multiple ways to look at problems that were confusing me. He always went above and beyond to ensure that everyone was clear on what was going to be tested. He always offered to stay late to review any additional problems that may be confusing.

You never feel like your time is being wasted.
I took a 6 week GMAT course with Anthony Ritz and was so impressed by the professionalism of Veritas instructors. Anthony is one of those super-humans, who received perfect scores on every standardized test from the LSAT to the GMAT to the GRE. My past experience with SAT tutors was to stay away from the wiz kids because they didn't know how to teach/translate their genius, but Anthony does. His lessons were content rich, but contained added bonuses like calculation shortcuts and tricks to approaching problems. Anthony edited many of the Veritas books, so his familiarity with them is impressive. He knows exactly which problems are most challenging so he cherry picks the best examples to work through in class. You never feel like your time is being wasted.
