The GMAT, or Graduate Management Admission Test, was created by business schools to assess skills and knowledge known to be most relevant for students who want to do well in their MBA courses. The test, which has been the most commonly used MBA admissions exam for over 60 years, has been used in 90% of business school admission decisions and is preferred over the GRE when applying to an MBA program. As such an essential part of your business journey, it is crucial to present yourself well by getting your best possible score on the GMAT. Enrolling in a Veritas Prep Salt Lake City GMAT course or class can be the resource needed to give you an edge over fellow applicants.

What is covered on the GMAT?

The GMAT is a 3.5-hour exam with the option to take two 8-minutes breaks. It is broken down into four separate sections: Integrated Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Analytical Writing Assessment, and the Verbal Reasoning section. Each section was created with the purpose of assessing your ability to think critically and use logic to solve problems. Let's take a closer look at what to expect in each part of the exam.

The GMAT Integrated Reasoning section takes 30 minutes to complete and is comprised of 12 questions. This part of the exam focuses specifically on your ability to analyze multiple sources of information, find relevant relationships, and use the right data to solve a problem. Most questions require multiple answers, and you only receive credit if you answer all the parts correctly.

There are four types of questions you can expect to find on this portion of the test: multi-source reasoning, table analysis, graphic interpretation, and two-part analysis. Multi-source reasoning questions focus on your ability to use data from different types of sources to answer questions. Table analysis assesses your experience in using tabular data to identify which pieces of information are relevant to a problem. Graphical interpretation requires you to identify relationships between different sets of data. Two-part analysis questions will ask you to solve several simultaneous equations while solving a multi-step issue. if you feel like you need a refresher in how to hone your problem-solving skills, a Salt Lake City GMAT course or class can provide you with many practice opportunities.

The GMAT Quantitative Reasoning section includes 31 questions which you must finish within 62 minutes. this part of the test has two types of questions: problem-solving and data sufficiency. Problem-solving questions will ask you to use critical thinking to figure out how to fix an issue. Data sufficiency questions require you to analyze a problem and determine whether you have enough information to solve a problem. Although this isn't a mathematics exam, you will need a fundamental knowledge of arithmetic and a basic understanding of algebraic and geometric concepts in order to do well on this portion of the exam. If you would like to brush up on these skills, a Salt Lake City GMAT prep course could help you learn to solve these types of problems quickly and efficiently.

The next section is the GMAT Analytical Writing Assessment, which contains only one question which you must answer in 30 minutes. This section includes a pre-written argument which you must analyze and critique. You do not need any specific knowledge about the subject in order to answer the question. You are being assessed on your ability to evaluate the argument and present a clear, thoughtful response. You will be graded on proper grammar and syntax, as well as your ability to write out an organized expression of your ideas in proper English. This skill is not only relevant for your GMAT prep, but also has a long-reaching impact on your future success in the business profession. a Salt Lake City GMAT course or class would be a great way to improve your writing skills under the instruction of top-scoring GMAT teachers.

The final section is the GMAT Verbal Reasoning section. This part of the exam contains 36 multiple-choice questions for you to answer in 65 minutes. You will be tested on reading comprehension, critical reasoning, and sentence correction during this portion of the GMAT. Reading comprehension questions will follow a passage, and you will be required to answer questions about main and supporting ideas and understand the context in order to draw inferences. Critical reasoning questions contain shorter passages. These questions ask you to make and evaluate arguments, as well as assessing possible action plans. Sentence correction questions provide you with a sentence, part of which will be underlined. You will need to look at the five possible answers to determine which rephrasing makes the original sentence more effective and grammatically correct. A Salt Lake City GMAT prep course can help you feel more prepared to handle these types of questions.

What other considerations should I take into account when deciding if I want to enroll in a Salt Lake City GMAT prep course?

There are lots of rules involved with the GMAT you may be unfamiliar with. For example, when you arrive at the GMAT on exam day, you will be given the opportunity to choose which sequence you wish to take the sections in. You will only have a few minutes to make a decision, so it would be wise to have an idea of your determination already before you arrive.

Additionally, you will receive an unofficial score at the end of your exam (minus the Analytical Writing Assessment score, which requires human evaluators to grade). You will have the opportunity to decide whether you want your score recorded or not, but will again only have a few minutes to decide. It would make sense to have a specific goal in mind when you arrive, so you already know how to make this decision. These are judgments you may want to make ahead of exam day during a Salt Lake City GMAT course or class. Prep courses can also be helpful in making sure you know all these rules before you show up to take your exam.

Aaron Pond truly loves connecting with his students who count on Aaron to be a mentor, a friend, and a resource throughout the entire MBA application process. While the GMAT isn’t rocket science, Aaron could do that as well after receiving his undergraduate degree in Astrophysics from BYU. Since then, Aaron graduated first in his MBA cohort (also from BYU), and finished his doctoral coursework in Educational Leadership at the University of Utah. Aaron’s engaging teaching style and creative methodologies help students look at questions from a totally different perspective, turning horrendous problems into simple, 20-second solutions.

Even though Aaron has read all of the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings books in German (which seems like one of those “genius-y” type of things), Aaron likes to say, The major work of the world is not done by geniuses. It is done by ordinary people, with balance in their lives, who have learned to work in an extraordinary manner. (Gordon B. Hinckley) As Aaron explains, “It is not just super-geniuses who ace the GMAT. It takes a balanced, calculated approach and it certainly takes work, but anybody can drastically improve their score.”

Aaron was a great teacher.
Aaron was a great teacher. He knows great techniques that  will help you improve your GMAT score. Thanks to Veritas Prep and Aaron, I'm a second year MBA student at one of the nation’s top MBA programs  and already have a full time job offer for when I finish my second year. I recommend Veritas Prep and Aaron to all my friends.

I really could feel like he cared about each student
My teacher Aaron went out of his way and put in extra time and effort to make sure all my questions were answered. He took time in each class to make sure each student understood the concepts clearly and still moved at an appropriate pace.  I really could feel like he cared about each student, not just his contract with Veritas Prep.

I haven't seen an instructor as well prepared as he is.
Our instructor Aaron Pond is a great guy always concerned with each student in our individual needs. I haven't seen an instructor as well prepared as he is.

Anthony Ritz: he’s really, really skilled at chess (he’s a U.S. Chess Federation-rated Expert), so unless you have some serious Gambit Game, we’d recommend you avoid facing him on the chessboard, and instead, take advantage of his exceptional math mind.  A native of Stone Mountain, Georgia, and a graduate of Georgia Tech and Georgetown Law, Anthony’s passionate about getting his students to the GMAT score they want.

“It’s great to be able to show people that math on the GMAT isn’t really about grinding harder or being a genius. It’s about understanding what’s really important and then combining that realization with a skill set that every prospective MBA student is capable of possessing. It’s exciting stuff!”

Anthony’s track record speaks for itself (he’s helped students lift their scores by as much as 230 points), and honestly -- he’s just a great guy.  But again, for the sake of your own self-esteem, ask him about his cats, talk to him about the Braves… but if you’re killing time with him between lessons, avoid the chessboard.

Anthony is a fantastic teacher!
Anthony is a fantastic teacher! He is not only great at getting the concepts across, but also changing the way you think about numbers and logic in general.  He changed the way I will add, subtract, and multiply for the rest of my life! You can tell by the way he talks and teaches that he genuinely cares about his students and our success.

He always went above and beyond
My instructor, Anthony Ritz, was absolutely amazing. He is very knowledgeable on the test material and takes pride in making sure each class member understands each problem type. He has an endless book of tricks that he is able to articulate in a very easy to remember way. I emailed and instant messaged him many times during the week, outside of class, and he was always quick to respond with multiple ways to look at problems that were confusing me. He always went above and beyond to ensure that everyone was clear on what was going to be tested. He always offered to stay late to review any additional problems that may be confusing.

You never feel like your time is being wasted.
I took a 6 week GMAT course with Anthony Ritz and was so impressed by the professionalism of Veritas instructors. Anthony is one of those super-humans, who received perfect scores on every standardized test from the LSAT to the GMAT to the GRE. My past experience with SAT tutors was to stay away from the wiz kids because they didn't know how to teach/translate their genius, but Anthony does. His lessons were content rich, but contained added bonuses like calculation shortcuts and tricks to approaching problems. Anthony edited many of the Veritas books, so his familiarity with them is impressive. He knows exactly which problems are most challenging so he cherry picks the best examples to work through in class. You never feel like your time is being wasted.

After receiving her degree in Physiology from the University of Washington, Erika took what she thought would be a short-term position teaching at a private tutoring academy while she finished her grad school applications. Several years and many score reports later, she was directing the academy, developing all new curricula for a wealth of standardized tests, and loving every minute of it. When an opportunity arose to write test content for an edtech company in Boston, Massachusetts, she bade the Pacific Northwest farewell and took a harrowing cross-country plane ride with her two very unhappy cats (for concerned readers, they have since forgiven her).

Since arriving in the Northeast, Erika has contributed to writing and editing thousands of GMAT and GRE questions and explanations, hundreds of lessons, and a growing number of instructional YouTube videos. She uses her experience being a testmaker to teach her students how to truly think like one — a process that not only yields impressive score improvements, but also empowers students to develop long-lasting critical thinking habits.

In her spare time, Erika enjoys making the most of her tiny kitchen and scoping out new taco joints. She still hasn’t finished a single grad school application, but at this point, she’d much rather help you with yours!
