What Fuqua Is Known For
Healthcare administration. If you’re coming from the healthcare industry, or hoping to enter it upon graduation, Fuqua should definitely be on your list. The school maintains one of the top reputations for health care in the nation and even offers multiple ways to integrate healthcare study into your curriculum. You can add a Health Sector Management (HSM) concentration or certificate to each of the four separate MBA programs. Duke HSM makes tremendous use of the Research Triangle area of North Carolina, home to many of the nation’s leading biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and other healthcare organizations. HSM courses are taught by Fuqua School of Business and Duke Hospital faculty, including those from the renowned graduate schools of nursing and medicine. Eight percent of graduates go into health care, the highest of top business schools.
Team-oriented culture. The collaborative, team-oriented approach infuses all aspects of the learning and social environments at Fuqua; “Team Fuqua” is an expression you’ll hear often. In the classroom, team-based projects are common; the environment is competitive (this is a top-tier business school, after all) but not in a cutthroat way. This concept extends beyond the student body. During popular “Fuqua Fridays” students, staff, and faculty members enjoy food and beverages. The school has taken some criticism for being too collaborative and supportive, and therefore not preparing the students for the “real world.” However, the school points directly to this strength as the reason for its #1 spot in the 2014 Bloomberg Businessweek ranking of top full-time MBA programs.
Options, options, and more options. In addition to the popular daytime, full-time MBA, Fuqua also offers the Cross-Continent MBA, Global Executive MBA, Weekend Executive MBA, two Master of Management Studies (MMS) programs, a PhD program, and a handful of joint-degree offerings. This represents the most diverse and globally-oriented set of degree offerings of any U.S. business school.
