Education:BS, UC Berkeley | JD, USC | MBA, UCLA

Ravi Sreeramahas seen his share of Pac-12 universities, having graduated from UC Berkeley (BS), USC (JD), and UCLA (MBA). He’s an experienced teacher who’s been selected as Veritas’ Instructor of the Year, and is currently the single highest-rated GMAT instructor in the world on GMAT Club (yes, you read that correctly). His “99th Percentile or Bust” teaching philosophy has empowered countless students (both in person, and online), and his methods are beloved for combining a rigorous classroom environment with personalized attention.

But it’s his deep passion for “making a difference” that motivates him. “Sometimes it's big, sometimes it's small. But in the end, you're always making a difference. And when you see your students achieve that success, you can't help but feel proud that you played a part in that process.” Oh - and did we mention that he’s the highest-rated GMAT instructor in the world?

GRE PREP CLASSES, COURSES, TUTORING NEAR ME

If you are interested in pursuing a master's degree, law degree, or MBA, you may need to take the GRE. The GRE (or Graduate Record Examination) is a standardized exam administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) and is designed to assess an applicant's ability to handle the rigorous academic coursework expected at the graduate level of study. Each graduate-level program assigns a different weight to your GRE scores (particularly the individual section scores for Quantitative Reasoning and Verbal Reasoning), but a strong performance can only help your application stand out in a crowded pool of hopeful applicants. If you feel that your GRE study plan could benefit from working with certified experts, the academic advisors at Veritas Prep can help you find resources to suit your needs, from prerecorded video lessons to individual tutoring.

THE GRE FORMAT
The GRE is a computer-based exam that lasts approximately three hours and 45 minutes. It consists of four sections: Analytical Writing, Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and an Experimental section, which could be either Verbal Reasoning or Quantitative Reasoning. Here is a closer look at what you can expect from each:

ANALYTICAL WRITING: The Analytical Writing section is always the first one encountered on the GRE. It consists of two separate writing tasks, each of which gives you 30 minutes to plan, organize, and write a coherent, compelling essay. The two tasks are:

  • Analyze an Issue: Your prompt is a topic of general interest, and your objective is to present a compelling argument for the position you choose to take on the issue. The topic presented can be analyzed from multiple perspectives, so there is not a “correct” opinion that you must find and argue for. Make sure that you think about the prompt from multiple angles; using a portion of your essay to discuss positions you didn’t take shows that you thoughtfully considered the complexities your given prompt presents.
  • Analyze an Argument: Your prompt is an argument made in favor of some course of action or interpretation of events, and your objective is to critique how well the argument makes its case. To craft a well-written, thoughtful essay, you should consider the explicit evidence offered as part of the argument, as well as any assumptions or implications that you have identified as underpinning the position taken by the author. In addition, you should take time to discuss how the logic that ties the argument together works.

Each essay will be graded based on several factors, including level of insight, development of ideas, use of logic, organization of ideas, and the level of writing itself (fluency, grammar, usage, and mechanics). In terms of scoring, the essays are graded individually by a trained essay rater and ETS’se-rater, an automated essay-scoring program. The scores for each essay are then averaged to yield the Analytical Writing score, from 0 to 6 in half-point increments.

VERBAL REASONING: Once you finish the Analytical Writing section, the rest of the test comes in a randomized order. Each GRE includes two Verbal Reasoning sections that test a student's knowledge of reading comprehension, critical reasoning, and vocabulary usage. These areas are tested through four types of Verbal Reasoning questions, as thoroughly discussed in the Veritas Prep GRE curriculum:

  • Text Completion: This type of Verbal Reasoning question presents a stimulus featuring from one to three blanks and asks you to choose the correct word for each blank to yield a logical, coherent sentence or paragraph. While having a strong vocabulary certainly helps, it is also important to apply your reasoning Skills. The Veritas Prep lesson will help you analyze the stimulus, identify key hints about the structure, and use contextual clues to make choosing the correct answer (or answers) much simpler.
  • Sentence Equivalence: Similar to Text Completion, these questions ask you to choose words to complete the stimulus. Unlike Text Completion, you will be choosing multiple words for one blank instead of one word for one to three blanks. Your objective is to choose the two answer choices that create a sentence with the same logical meaning. As with Text Completion, your vocabulary skills matter, but so do your critical reading and reasoning abilities. The Veritas Prep lesson will prepare you to use all available hints in the stimulus and evaluate the answers logically to make the correct options more obvious.
  • Reading Comprehension: For many prospective GRE takers, this is the Verbal Reasoning type that is the most familiar. If you've taken a standardized test, you’ve faced the task of reading a passage about something you have no interest in and then answering questions you also have no interest in. On the GRE, the passages and questions you encounter will be even trickier, and it’s not enough to be a good reader. You also must be able to identify what information actually matters (less than you’d think) and how to break down questions and answer choices. Our Reading Comprehension lesson will teach you an effective way to attack the passage through a strategy that addresses two very common difficulties: spending too much time reading the passage, and retaining little information from that time investment. From there, we'll teach you how to identify exactly what a question is asking you to do, how to use the passage effectively to make the correct answer appear, and how to find common tricks and traps the GRE writers use, in the passage itself as well as the questions and answers.
  • Critical Reasoning: True to their name, Critical Reasoning problems measure your ability to think critically. In large part, these questions ask you to read arguments and notice flaws or vulnerabilities within them, noting the potential for alternative explanations (other than the conclusion proffered) and counterarguments. In the Veritas Prep Critical Reasoning lesson, you will learn how to identify types of statements in an argument, evaluate question stems to know exactly what you need to do, and understand the logic employed by the argument. Note that these Critical Reasoning questions are considered “Reading Comprehension” questions in ETS parlance, but these one-paragraph, one-question questions have a flavor of their own and deserve special attention.

Each Verbal Reasoning section consists of 20 multiple-choice questions (of the four types discussed above) that you have 30 minutes to answer. The test incorporates computer-adaptive testing (CAT), so your second Verbal Reasoning section will be harder if you perform well on the first section. Some students fall into the trap of trying to figure out how they did on the first section using the perceived difficulty of the second, but the GRE experts at Veritas Prep can share strategies to help you avoid this unproductive line of thinking. GRE Verbal Reasoning section scores range from 130 to 170 in one-point increments.

QUANTITATIVE REASONING: Similarly, each GRE includes two Quantitative Reasoning sections that test a student's knowledge of high school-level mathematics, including four main areas:

  • Arithmetic: topics such as integers, factors, and decimals; the four basic operations; prime numbers, factors, and multiples; and percents, ratios, and rates.
  • Algebra: topics such as exponents and roots; equations and expressions; quadratics; and absolute value and inequalities.
  • Geometry: topics such as lines and angles; triangles, quadrilaterals, and other polygons; circles; and coordinate geometry.
  • Data Analysis: topics such as basic statistics (mean, median, mode, range, and standard deviation); interpretation of data in various kinds of charts and graphs; basic probability for one or multiple events; and counting problems (permutations and combinations).

The Veritas Prep curriculum for GRE Quantitative Reasoning starts with refreshing key skills and concepts that you may have learned many years ago before moving into advanced application so those skills. Working your way through the curriculum, you will also develop skills and techniques for handling the four question types you will face:

  • Multiple Choice with One Correct Answer: the basic standardized test math question you’ve seen many times before. On the GRE, however, the wording will be trickier, even if the math isn’t more difficult, and the test writers are very talented at laying subtle traps to lead you astray.
  • Multiple Choice with One Or More Correct Answers: a variation on the standard multiple choice question format. On these questions, you must find all correct answers to get credit, and that may mean picking anywhere from one to six answers.
  • Numeric Entry: here, you’ll have to provide the answer yourself. While you lose the context clues answer choices can provide, you do have the ability to use the GRE calculator to do the calculations and then transfer your answer to the entry box on-screen.
  • Quantitative Comparison: for most students, this is the only truly “new” question type. On Quantitative Comparison questions, the test presents two quantities, and your objective is to determine which one is greater. However, to say that one quantity is greater, you must be certain that it willalways be greater. Logical skills and careful interpretation are crucial.

In each Quantitative Reasoning section, you have 20 questions (including multiple-choice and free-response items) to answer over 35 minutes. The exam uses CAT to more accurately test a student's potential, so the second Quantitative Reasoning section will be more challenging than the first if you do well. Our expert GRE preparation tools and instructors can show you exactly what you can expect to see on the exam, allowing you to improve study efficiency. The GRE Quantitative Reasoning section receives a score on the same 130-170 scale as the Verbal Reasoning section.

EXPERIMENTAL/RESEARCH SECTIONS: The Experimental section is an unscored Verbal or Quantitative section that the GRE's operator uses to test items for future exams. It will feature the same content and question types as discussed above. This section isn't labeled on the computer-based exam, so you need to do your best on every section presented to you on exam day.
There is also an unscored Research section you can choose to take if you so desire.

THE VERITAS PREP ADVANTAGE

At Veritas Prep, we pride ourselves on not only helping you learn the key skills, concepts and techniques required by the GRE but also preparing you to understand how the test works so you can attack it most effectively. To help you develop the higher-level abilities necessary to score to the best of your ability, the Veritas Prep curriculum (and the individual lessons) are designed around three core areas:
