The first step in any good AP Japanese Language and Culture Exam prep program is developing a solid understanding of the exam’s formatting. The test assesses your understanding of the Japanese language with listening, writing, and speaking components. You will also study Japanese culture to help you understand Japan’s perspective on various issues.

The exam itself is divided into two sections, each of which represent one half of your total score. Section One contains 70 multiple-choice questions split into two parts named A and B. Part A is based on listening passages and contains 30-35 questions over a 20-minute testing session. Part B consists of reading passages and contains 36-40 questions over a 60-minute testing session. You have a total of 80 minutes for this section of the test.

The second section is a free response section divided into four distinct tasks. The first task measures your interpersonal writing skills by asking you to reply to a Japanese test message. Your response is graded for grammatical accuracy as well as logical content.

The second task assesses your presentational writing skills by requiring you to compose an original Japanese essay comparing and contrasting a pair of articles. The third task centers on interpersonal speaking, requiring you to respond to four prompts within a simulated conversation in a logical manner. Finally, the fourth task measures your presentational speaking skills. You must give an oral presentation in Japanese on Japan’s cultural perspective, giving you an opportunity to demonstrate your command of both Japanese language and culture. You have a total of 40 minutes for this section.

Learning a new language can be challenging, but there are many ways to prepare for the test. For example, practicing your conversational Japanese with AP Japanese Language and Culture tutors may make you more comfortable using the language. Likewise, taking practice tests during AP Japanese Language and Culture tutoring sessions may help you identify areas of opportunity that could benefit from further study.
