Wharton Class Profile

Among top MBA programs, Wharton has one of the highest percentages of its class entering from the "usual suspects" industries of consulting and finance. However, its demographics have been gradually shifting to include more nontraditional candidates. For example, 14% of its Class of 2016 came from technology, up from just 6% in 2015.

Academics: What Wharton Is Looking For

Majors. Lots of majors. Wharton students may select one of 17 different in-depth majors or create one of their own. The idea behind majoring is that it provides students with the opportunity to delve deeper into specific areas of interest, either to cultivate an area of expertise or to assist in facilitating a future career shift.

Culture & Campus Life: Similar Programs Culturally

Harvard. The world’s largest full-time MBA program, at more than 1,850 students, Harvard Business School (HBS) tends to have a much more formal culture than other top-tier business schools such as Stanford, Kellogg, and NYU Stern. Classes at HBS begin and end precisely on time, so every student must be in his or her seat, ready to dive into the day’s case.

Admissions: The Interview

The dreaded team-based discussion. At Wharton, interviews are conducted by invitation only and are a required component of the application. Wharton will again use the innovative, if somewhat controversial and not universally loved, team-based discussion model first launched in the 2012–13 application year. Instead of an in-depth, one-on-one interview with an admissions officer, student, or alumni interviewer, groups of five to six candidates will engage in a discussion together.
