Chris Kane is clearly someone who has always aspired to -- and conquered -- great heights. As a climbing guide for nearly a decade, Chris introduced hundreds of people to rock climbing and made notable ascents across North America, from El Capitan in Yosemite to remote big walls in Newfoundland. After joining Veritas Prep in 2004, Chris was quickly named Instructor of the Year for his engaging and demanding classes that have helped over 4000 students around the world reach their GMAT goals. In addition to his work as a veteran instructor, Chris plays a key role in curriculum development for Veritas Prep and is co-author of our GMAT, GRE, SAT, and ACT study guides.
In the classroom, Chris believes strongly in the wisdom put forth by Benjamin Franklin: Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn. It’s a quote that has helped frame Chris’s teaching style – one that favors efficient problem solving over memorization. In Chris’s words: “The entire Veritas Prep curriculum has been developed around the concept of Learning by Doing, and the Ben Franklin quote captures exactly why we’ve done that. Rote learning is not an effective approach in education, and this is especially true when preparing for a reasoning and problem solving based test such as the GMAT.”

David Newland sees himself not simply as someone conveying information and content but as a coach as well. As he explains, “The students that I work with need more than knowledge, they need to be able to perform to the best of their abilities on test day and it is my pleasure to help them do it!” As a competitor both in athletics and debate his whole life, he could choose to focus on his own successes of which he’s had many, but David finds a greater pride and joy in learning of the triumphs of his students. He truly relishes hearing from students he’s worked with that they have gotten their goal score or into their dream program. So if you’re fortunate enough to work with David, please be sure to let him know when the same happens for you.
Despite all the accomplishments, David did suffered one somewhat traumatic blow early in life. “I put together a song and dance number for the third-grade school talent show and the music teacher required me to lip synch so that no one would have to hear me sing. My dreams of a music career were shattered.”
Born and raised in Independence, Missouri, David earned his JD from Michigan and MA and BA from Truman University and now enjoys living in the beauty of Vermont. In fact, inspired by the Green Mountain state’s quiet, open roads, he’s now considering getting a motorcycle so that he can drive very slowly on the deserted roads of the early mornings. Might just be a great chance to sing out loud as you go, David.
Real reviewsCould I have scored 700+ without David? Probably not
I paid for 28 hours of online tutoring with Veritas Prep. I was assigned David Newland as my instructor. It was the best money I could have spent. Within six weeks of working with David, I scored 770 and 760 on the GMAT Prep Software PP1 and PP2 tests. On the real exam I scored 700 (90%), comprising Quant 47 (73%) and Verbal 39 (88%). The drop between the PP tests and the real test was mostly due to nerves and bad time management on the day. Could I have scored 700+ without David? Probably not given I only had six weeks to prepare. David was excellent. With 8+ years of GMAT experience he knows how to solve every question the test can throw at you. He explained methodology in a clear and easy to apply fashion. He was also flexible and we could frequently schedule sessions on short notice.
This guy is smart and really knows the GMAT inside and out
Got so lucky to get David Newland as my instructor. I went into the course more confident in quant, and David is a verbal expert, specifically in Critical Reasoning. This guy is smart and really knows the GMAT inside and out, which was helpful since I had never taken the exam before. I could hear his voice inside my head as I did practice problems and during the actual GMAT.
David was excellent.
The instructor David was excellent. I found that he took the time to explain each section properly and in easy to understand language. I very much enjoyed this course and would recommend it to any one with a very hectic schedule.
