What is your favorite lesson to teach?
My favorite lesson to each is the topic I found most bewildering when I was a college a student – Statistics, Combinations, and Probability. Typically, I’ll start the lesson by mentioning a study in which a group of physicians, given a set of statistics about a hypothetical patient, estimate that the patient has a 75% probability of having a certain disease; the correct probability in this case turns out to be more like 9%.  In addition to being deeply disturbing, the study is a great reminder that even highly educated people make horrendous mistakes when it comes to these types of problems – the human brain simply isn’t hardwired to be good at probability.  However, students quickly see that with a couple of equations and a few helpful timesaving tricks, these once madding, complex questions become not just manageable, but easy. I’ve lost count of the number of times a student has said something like “I thought I was really bad at probability.  I just never learned how to do these questions!”  That’s true for everyone, not just doctors who terrify their patients with inaccurate prognoses of gloom.

What is your favorite Veritas Prep success story?
Several months ago, I had a student named Christie.  In addition to being a delight to teach – always sitting at the front of class, always smiling, always participating in discussions – she was an energetic and inspiring person.  Her passion was green energy, and she wanted to get into a top MBA program to broaden her opportunities to make the world a cleaner, healthier place.  But in order to get into an elite program, you need to ace the GMAT.  These were high stakes.

Fortunately, Christie was as hard a worker as I’ve ever had in my classes, often staying late to ask questions, and even indulging me when I offered to show how a GMAT question was connected to Euclid’s proof for why there’s no largest prime number.  (It’s a simple and elegant proof, but after a three-hour class, enthusiasm for non-GMAT math generally tends to wane.)  Happily, Christie scored a 740 on the official test, exceeding her initial goal.  She will go on to do great things, and I get to feel like I played a small role in helping her clear that first hurdle on her way to saving the planet.  For a teacher, it doesn’t get any better than that.

Dave Goldstein is a phenomenal instructor who is truly passionate about teaching. He went out of his way to ensure that each student walked away from every class with as much knowledge as we could possibly retain. I have taken a prep course with Kaplan before, and the standard at Veritas is just way above the competition.

He is one of the best teachers anyone can have.
David is a true teacher he is a great person and a great professional. I think I speak for all of the others students when I say that he is one of the best teachers anyone can have.

DAVE was amazing.
The class was a small, intimate class, and DAVE was amazing.  He always made sure everyone was along for the ride- but kept the pace up. The study materials that Veritas Prep gave were great because each subject has a book. Instead of one huge study book- the material is broken out. All around I would recommend this class to anyone.

What is your proudest accomplishment?
It seems terrifically cliche to say aloud, but my proudest accomplishment was having my daughter, Athena. I haven't had the easiest path in life, which is likely why it surprises me that it is neither pulling myself out of a lower income household and terrible school district to receive an undergraduate merit scholarship nor receiving my MS/MBA while working full-time and traveling extensively. 
 
When I look at other aspects of my life, those are things a person can arguably control. I can always study more, work harder, invest better, improve relationships. But the rollercoaster that is carrying and having a baby resides on  a different plane, and the sheer fact of making it this far, alive, and without any huge screw-ups, is something to be proud of! 

What do you love about teaching? 
I've actually never looked at teaching or tutoring as the word is defined. It seems one-sided, filled with images of talking drones standing in front of a whiteboard. When I think about my teaching I see it as sharing - sharing knowledge and an immense passion for that knowledge. Einstein said, I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious. I am no Einstein, but the curiosity he speaks to is part of why I have chosen to teach. Like the goofy PSA says Knowledge is Power! but I believe knowledge controls access to opportunity and advancement. I have an internal drive to teach as many students as I can, so they are able to access the knowledge needed to achieve and reach goals.

What do you love about teaching? 
I have always loved teaching, and I am lucky that it just happened to be one of my fortes. Not to be overly philosophical, but teaching is just as much a learning process for the student as it is for the instructor. I have had such a great time teaching my students because I am constantly learning to see things from their perspective. For instance, students would sometimes baffle me when they see an alternative solution to a problem that I thought could be solved only in one way. Teaching allows me to stay humble, and to continue learning.

If you weren't teaching the GMAT, what would you be teaching instead? 
If I were not teaching the GMAT, I would be teaching the MCAT. As a current medical school student (MD/MBA), it would make more sense for me to teach the MCAT, but for some reason, I find the GMAT to be a more intuitive test, and certainly a more entertaining one.

What is your favorite lesson to teach?
My favorite lesson to teach is data sufficiency. Everyone learns something in data sufficiency! Everyone has that “aha moment” that I love. Some people come to the lesson with a big fear of data sufficiency and I am able to give them the tools to build their confidence. Some people come in thinking that they know everything about data sufficiency and are shocked by how much they actually learn during that lesson. It really is a metaphor for all of the other sections of the GMAT, it is not just what you know, it is how you play the game and data sufficiency is all about learning to play the game. What can be more fun than that? 

If you were not teaching the GMAT what would you be teaching instead?
If I were not teaching the GMAT I would be a coach. In fact I think of what I do for Veritas Prep as coaching. Like a sports coach or a vocal coach, or even a life coach, a GMAT coach is doing more than conveying content. The students that I work with need more than knowledge, they need to be able to perform to the best of their abilities on test day and it is my pleasure to help them do it!

Could I have scored 700+ without David? Probably not
I paid for 28 hours of online tutoring with Veritas Prep. I was assigned David Newland as my instructor. It was the best money I could have spent. Within six weeks of working with David, I scored 770 and 760 on the GMAT Prep Software PP1 and PP2 tests. On the real exam I scored 700 (90%), comprising Quant 47 (73%) and Verbal 39 (88%). The drop between the PP tests and the real test was mostly due to nerves and bad time management on the day. Could I have scored 700+ without David? Probably not given I only had six weeks to prepare. David was excellent. With 8+ years of GMAT experience he knows how to solve every question the test can throw at you. He explained methodology in a clear and easy to apply fashion. He was also flexible and we could frequently schedule sessions on short notice.

This guy is smart and really knows the GMAT inside and out
Got so lucky to get David Newland as my instructor. I went into the course more confident in quant, and David is a verbal expert, specifically in Critical Reasoning. This guy is smart and really knows the GMAT inside and out, which was helpful since I had never taken the exam before. I could hear his voice inside my head as I did practice problems and during the actual GMAT.

The instructor David was excellent. I found that he took the time to explain each section properly and in easy to understand language. I very much enjoyed this course and would recommend it to any one with a very hectic schedule.

What is your favorite quote?
My favorite quote is one by Benjamin Franklin on education: Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn. The entire Veritas Prep curriculum has been developed around the concept of Learning by Doing, and this quote captures exactly why we have done that. Rote memorization and rote learning are not effective approaches in education, and this is especially true when preparing for a reasoning and problem solving based test such as the GMAT.

What is your proudest accomplishment?
My proudest life accomplishment remains the first time I climbed El Capitan in Yosemite Valley. Although I had already been an active rock-climber while in high school on the coast of Maine, I was not prepared for the intimidating scale of Yosemite's huge granite walls when I moved to California to attend Stanford.  The first time I climbed there, I stood at the base of El Cap and thought I would never in my life climb this amazing piece of rock. One year later, after 4 days on the wall, I pulled onto the summit of El Cap, exhausted and elated; even though I have gone on to do many harder and more committing climbs, nothing will ever compare to the sense of accomplishment I felt that day.

Chris is a master of the GMAT material
My instructor, Chris Kane, was outstanding and helped me understand the different types of questions that the GMAT will use and the best ways to conquer these questions. What do you love about teaching?
Making a difference. Sometimes it's big, sometimes it's small. But in the end, you're always making a difference. And when you see your students achieve that success, you can't help but feel proud that you played a part in that process.

What is your favorite Veritas Prep success story?
The Chef! I learned on the first day of class that he was a high-school dropout who never went to college. So, I pulled him aside during a break and I told him that he would have to change his attitude if he wanted to achieve success with the GMAT. He was going to have to listen to me instead of those demons from his past. But if he could not do that, he should walk out right then and there. Fortunately, he said that he would try - which is all I could truly ask at that point. Over the following weeks, I motivated him to work hard and he succeeded... in a big way, ultimately scoring 760 and getting into INSEAD!

Apart from his great teaching style, he kept the class motivated.
I took some of these trials with other companies and I can say I was easily bored after 1 hour. But not on Ravi's class. Apart from his great teaching style, he kept the class motivated. He made me try harder on each question one after the other. He reached out to everyone in the class and made sure that we understood where we did wrong and what we could do to avoid mistakes and I think that was the most important thing. He made sure everyone was satisfied at the end of the class and the show up to the classes represented that. It was a very dynamic class with everyone helping each other out and some of us are still in touch, helping each other with GMAT problems.

I have never learned more from any other class I have taken in my history as a student. Ravi was easily one of the best teachers I have ever had. Ravi knew the ins and outs of every problem and explained his reasoning extremely well. I wouldn't recommend any other course or teacher if you are preparing to take the GMAT.

Ravi makes the GMAT looks so much more approachable.
As an international student non-native speaker, I was having a hard time with the verbal session - more specifically with the Sentence Correction. But after taking Ravi's classes, Sentence Correction became my favorite topic in the Verbal session. It's amazing how Ravi makes the GMAT looks so much more approachable. The way he teaches and explains all the GMAT stuffs is spectacular.

Which is your favorite lesson to teach?
Data Sufficiency, no doubt. I love the hungry looks my students get in their eyes when it suddenly clicks and they realize they can use the GMAT's traps against it. The Princess Bride routine I do as part of it? That helps, I'm sure, but it might just be to keep us all entertained.

What is your favorite problem from the Official Guide and why?
13th Ed, SC #133

I really like teaching Sentence Correction because it's the one place in Verbal where significant strides can be made by learning a few key grammatical concepts. This problem does its best to hide its classic 3/2 verb agreement split by switching up the continuous/non-continuous aspect (not a concept tested on the GMAT) in the verb decision point at the end of the underlining. Once you notice that split, it also does its best to hide the subject behind a raft of modifiers, but again a simple rule (the subject you're looking for won't be found in a modifier unless the verb is part of that same modifier) helps us get rid of tempting plural candidates nets, devices, and laws to find the correct singular subject compliance. From there it's relatively obvious.

So what I like is that this problem is very easy for someone who has mastered two of the key skills we teach: identifying the good decision points and identifying the proper subject for a verb. And yet for someone lacking those two skills it's fairly difficult. I find that while many students want to improve on Verbal, deep down they need to be sold on why they should relearn (or in many cases learn for the first time) basic grammar instead of just relying on their ears. And this problem does a good job of showing them.

Ethan took me from a 610 to a 690. I have learned from Ethan both in a group and one-on-one setting, and in both he is phenomenal. If you want an instructor who adjusts based off of your learning style,  reinforces both the technical and strategic sides of the GMAT while keeping the material engaging, he's your man. Ethan turns the cold, pragmatic GMAT into a humorous foe by using examples from life and film. After working with Ethan, you won't be able to watch The Princess Bride without thinking of Data Sufficiency... and that's not a bad thing. I went from being nervous and self-questioning on my first test to relaxed, optimistic, and (I didn't expect to say this) EXCITED on my final test day.

Which is your favorite lesson to teach?
My favorite lesson: Geometry.....I make it VERY interactive and I have the students 'teach the class'.

What do you love about teaching?
I love that moment when a student suddenly gets it.

What subject did you struggle with the most in school and how did you overcome it?
I hated Geography when I was younger.  It was the only class that I ever got a C in.  Freshman year in college, I took a class on Economic Development in the Third World, and in my first 10 days we had to learn every single country on the planet and be able to place it on the map.  I was a Freshman in a class of Seniors.  It was the only assignment I got an A on during that class, but I was so happy to have overcome my own fears of Geography and ace it.

Where was Kevin during my high school and college courses? He engaged the class 2 nights a week for 3 hours by creating personal relationships with each one of us. He truly cared how we were progressing in our knowledge of the lessons and helped us each individually during breaks if he noticed we were lost. Class was great.

I had Kevin Richardson as my tutor.  With his help, I raised my GMAT score by 120 points within a month!  I took the regular Veritas Prep course about 1.5 years ago, but did not take the GMAT right after the course.  After 1.5 years, my skills became rusty, and that resulted in a disappointing score.  Kevin helped me by analyzing my skill-set and pointing out my fortes and my weaknesses. He then customized his teaching methods per my needs and built up my confidence along the way.  After being burned by the low score, it was important to have Kevin providing me with tips for each section and helping me to regain my confidence.  His teaching is easy to understand and right to the point.  For anyone considering a GMAT tutoring service. Which is your favorite lesson to teach?
That one is easy. Arithmetic. Students often think that a lesson called “Arithmetic” will not even be worth their time, until we begin looking at the math from an entirely different perspective. Remember: the GMAT is a critical thinking test and not a math test. It is fun to watch the students’ expressions as we turn horrendous looking problems into simple, 20-second solutions, using a little bit of “mental gymnastics.”

What is your favorite quote?
The major work of the world is not done by geniuses. It is done by ordinary people, with balance in their lives, who have learned to work in an extraordinary manner.” (Gordon B. Hinckley) This quote certainly applies to how we approach the GMAT: it is not just super-geniuses who ace the GMAT. It takes a balanced, calculated approach – and it certainly takes work – but anybody can drastically improve their score. 

What is your favorite Veritas Prep success story?
One of my students signed up for the Veritas Prep course, but he lived in Cedar City, UT – a distance of over 250 miles away. He made the commute to every class, studied hard, and ended up improving his GMAT score from a 430 to a 710 – a 280 point increase! He was always so appreciative. Several times throughout the class, he would pull me aside and say, “That was definitely worth the commute.”
