Which is your favorite lesson to teach?
There are a number of great Veritas Prep lessons, but the Arithmetic lesson is probably my favorite to teach. It’s just a fantastic chance to grab people right out of the gate and hit them over the head with the value of new approaches and new ways of thinking about problems. It’s great to be able to show people that math on the GMAT isn’t really about grinding harder or being a genius. It’s about understanding what’s really important and then combining that realization with a skill set that every prospective MBA student is capable of possessing. And that’s before we hit you with the factors/number theory stuff and really blow your mind. It’s exciting stuff, and at the end of that lesson, I always wish we had a couple more hours to keep doing questions.

What is your favorite Veritas Prep success story?
Once upon a time, I had a student, Rachel, gain 230 points. She took every bit of advice I gave seriously, did every piece of work we asked, came into every lesson with specific and well-considered questions, and generally proved to be a model student. Once the course was over, we scheduled a few hours of individual tutoring. Rachel brought in charts of wrong answers broken down along multiple dimensions and was able to articulate precise areas of need for improvement. A couple of tutoring sessions in, she hit 750 on a practice test. We actually canceled a remaining tutoring session so that she could take the real thing ASAP. In the end, Rachel went from a 510 to a 740 after the Veritas Prep course and about five hours of one-on-one tutoring time. There’s just nothing better about being a tutor than hearing amazing news from a delighted student. It’s my singular goal every time I teach.

Anthony is a fantastic teacher!
Anthony is a fantastic teacher! He is not only great at getting the concepts across, but also changing the way you think about numbers and logic in general.  He changed the way I will add, subtract, and multiply for the rest of my life! You can tell by the way he talks and teaches that he genuinely cares about his students and our success.

He always went above and beyond
My instructor, Anthony Ritz, was absolutely amazing. He is very knowledgeable on the test material and takes pride in making sure each class member understands each problem type. He has an endless book of tricks that he is able to articulate in a very easy to remember way. I emailed and instant messaged him many times during the week, outside of class, and he was always quick to respond with multiple ways to look at problems that were confusing me. He always went above and beyond to ensure that everyone was clear on what was going to be tested. He always offered to stay late to review any additional problems that may be confusing.

You never feel like your time is being wasted.
I took a 6 week GMAT course with Anthony Ritz and was so impressed by the professionalism of Veritas instructors. Anthony is one of those super-humans, who received perfect scores on every standardized test from the LSAT to the GMAT to the GRE. My past experience with SAT tutors was to stay away from the wiz kids because they didn't know how to teach/translate their genius, but Anthony does. His lessons were content rich, but contained added bonuses like calculation shortcuts and tricks to approaching problems. Anthony edited many of the Veritas books, so his familiarity with them is impressive. He knows exactly which problems are most challenging so he cherry picks the best examples to work through in class. You never feel like your time is being wasted.

Which is your favorite lesson to teach? Although I like to think of myself as a quant specialist, my favorite lesson to teach is Critical Reasoning.  The lesson offers a lot of nice techniques for solving these problems and recognizing trap answers.  It also introduces strategies and a critical mindset that are vital not just to this problem type but to the entire test.  Being able to apply the lessons in this section will help students improve their score far more than memorizing mathematical formulas or grammar rules.

What is your favorite quote? “In three words I can sum up everything I’ve learned about life: it goes on.” – Robert Frost Studying for the GMAT (not to mention taking it) can be a very stressful process at times, particularly after a tough test or day of studying.  I encourage my students to maintain a positive perspective while learning and to take one day a week to rest and enjoy the world outside of the GMAT and business school.

Which is your favorite lesson to teach?
Arithmetic -- specifically, Number Properties.  I like to think of these properties as character traits.  Integers, like your friends, have various personalities, and the dynamic you're going to get when you assemble some particular ones of their personalities in some particular way is, as we all know, dependent on the group and the activity.  If we invite an even integer into our product, we're never going to turn our product odd again, no matter how many odd integers we also invite.  If George and Joe get rotated into the ping-pong lineup, nobody else is going to get the table back, ever.  Not that you have to spend all your time in party-planning analogies... but thinking about numbers is frankly downright fun if you pay attention to their characters.

What do you love about teaching?
Seeing people surprise themselves.  Especially when it comes to the quant section, people sometimes come to the table with these really teeny-tiny comfort zones, and their thinking gets jammed up at the beginning by lack of confidence alone.  Some people seem to think they'd be almost *offending* math by subjecting it to their reasoning, like What do I know -- who am I to even try to reason through this?  The lovely thing is that by teaching via asking successive questions, you can make people creep further and further out of their comfort zones -- tricked you! -- to venture their ideas.  WAY more often than not, the instincts they initially mistrusted show themselves time and again to deliver, and you start hearing more and more I never knew it made sense like this!.  In those cases, it's more than the accompanying score jump that's exciting; it's that realization you get to watch people develop, that their own logic is totally consonant with that of math.

Ashley was amazing.
Ashley was amazing. She clearly has the experience and the flow of the course nailed down. I never felt lost or confused in regards to how the course was organized. She was approachable and could explain things in various ways so people who learn differently could grasp the same concept. I came into the course more looking for confidence and the tricks of the GMAT. I found both. I decided to wait to take the test for a bit, but every time I email Ashley she is always there to help me out!

Ashley was incredibly high-energy and managed to bring fun and humor to every class
My Veritas Prep course with Ashley Newman-Owens totally exceeded my expectations. Class was held twice a week for three hours in the evening, so I was coming to every class after a long day of work, bracing myself for a slog through boring material. But Ashley was incredibly high-energy and managed to bring fun and humor to every class, which kept me engaged. Besides being very sharp and clearly an expert on the material, Ashley was also good adapting to the different needs and levels within the class.

What is your favorite lesson to teach?
My favorite lesson to teach is data sufficiency. Everyone learns something in data sufficiency! Everyone has that “aha moment” that I love. Some people come to the lesson with a big fear of data sufficiency and I am able to give them the tools to build their confidence. Some people come in thinking that they know everything about data sufficiency and are shocked by how much they actually learn during that lesson. It really is a metaphor for all of the other sections of the GMAT, it is not just what you know, it is how you play the game and data sufficiency is all about learning to play the game. What can be more fun than that?

If you were not teaching the GMAT what would you be teaching instead?
If I were not teaching the GMAT I would be a coach. In fact I think of what I do for Veritas Prep as coaching. Like a sports coach or a vocal coach, or even a life coach, a GMAT coach is doing more than conveying content. The students that I work with need more than knowledge, they need to be able to perform to the best of their abilities on test day and it is my pleasure to help them do it!

Could I have scored 700+ without David? Probably not
I paid for 28 hours of online tutoring with Veritas Prep. I was assigned David Newland as my instructor. It was the best money I could have spent. Within six weeks of working with David, I scored 770 and 760 on the GMAT Prep Software PP1 and PP2 tests. On the real exam I scored 700 (90%), comprising Quant 47 (73%) and Verbal 39 (88%). The drop between the PP tests and the real test was mostly due to nerves and bad time management on the day. Could I have scored 700+ without David? Probably not given I only had six weeks to prepare. David was excellent. With 8+ years of GMAT experience he knows how to solve every question the test can throw at you. He explained methodology in a clear and easy to apply fashion. He was also flexible and we could frequently schedule sessions on short notice.

This guy is smart and really knows the GMAT inside and out
Got so lucky to get David Newland as my instructor. I went into the course more confident in quant, and David is a verbal expert, specifically in Critical Reasoning. This guy is smart and really knows the GMAT inside and out, which was helpful since I had never taken the exam before. I could hear his voice inside my head as I did practice problems and during the actual GMAT.

David was excellent.
The instructor David was excellent. I found that he took the time to explain each section properly and in easy to understand language. I very much enjoyed this course and would recommend it to any one with a very hectic schedule.

What is your favorite quote?
My favorite quote is one by Benjamin Franklin on education: Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn. The entire Veritas Prep curriculum has been developed around the concept of Learning by Doing, and this quote captures exactly why we have done that. Rote memorization and rote learning are not effective approaches in education, and this is especially true when preparing for a reasoning and problem solving based test such as the GMAT.

What is your proudest accomplishment?
My proudest life accomplishment remains the first time I climbed El Capitan in Yosemite Valley. Although I had already been an active rock-climber while in high school on the coast of Maine, I was not prepared for the intimidating scale of Yosemite's huge granite walls when I moved to California to attend Stanford.  The first time I climbed there, I stood at the base of El Cap and thought I would never in my life climb this amazing piece of rock. One year later, after 4 days on the wall, I pulled onto the summit of El Cap, exhausted and elated; even though I have gone on to do many harder and more committing climbs, nothing will ever compare to the sense of accomplishment I felt that day.

Chris is a master of the GMAT material
My instructor, Chris Kane, was outstanding and helped me understand the different types of questions that the GMAT will use and the best ways to conquer these questions. I also did individual tutoring sessions with Chris and would highly recommend him. Chris knows how to teach complex subject matter to students. Chris knows all the different types of questions and strategies that the GMAT will throw at you. Choose Veritas Prep and Chris Kane.

Amazing teacher!
I can confidently say that Chris is responsible for at least 100 points increase in my score. Amazing teacher!

Just an overall great instructor.
Chris Kane was enthusiastic, very knowledgeable in all facets of the GMAT and just an overall great instructor. The 12 books that are given are extremely helpful, especially the skillbuilder sections. I learned valuable techniques and strategies to assist with question approach and time management. It was an awesome experience that was very beneficial.

What do you love about teaching?
Making a difference. Sometimes it's big, sometimes it's small. But in the end, you're always making a difference. And when you see your students achieve that success, you can't help but feel proud that you played a part in that process.

What is your favorite Veritas Prep success story?
The Chef! I learned on the first day of class that he was a high-school dropout who never went to college. So, I pulled him aside during a break and I told him that he would have to change his attitude if he wanted to achieve success with the GMAT. He was going to have to listen to me instead of those demons from his past. But if he could not do that, he should walk out right then and there. Fortunately, he said that he would try - which is all I could truly ask at that point. Over the following weeks, I motivated him to work hard and he succeeded... in a big way, ultimately scoring 760 and getting into INSEAD!

Real reviews

Apart from his great teaching style, he kept the class motivated.
I took some of these trials with other companies and I can say I was easily bored after 1 hour. But not on Ravi's class. Apart from his great teaching style, he kept the class motivated. He made me try harder on each question one after the other. He reached out to everyone in the class and made sure that we understood where we did wrong and what we could do to avoid mistakes and I think that was the most important thing. He made sure everyone was satisfied at the end of the class and the show up to the classes represented that. It was a very dynamic class with everyone helping each other out and some of us are still in touch, helping each other with GMAT problems.

Ravi was easily one of the best teachers I have ever had.
I have never learned more from any other class I have taken in my history as a student. Ravi was easily one of the best teachers I have ever had. Ravi knew the ins and outs of every problem and explained his reasoning extremely well. I wouldn't recommend any other course or teacher if you are preparing to take the GMAT.

Ravi makes the GMAT looks so much more approachable.
As an international student non-native speaker, I was having a hard time with the verbal session - more specifically with the Sentence Correction. But after taking Ravi's classes, Sentence Correction became my favorite topic in the Verbal session. It's amazing how Ravi makes the GMAT looks so much more approachable. The way he teaches and explains all the GMAT stuffs is spectacular.

Which is your favorite lesson to teach?
Data Sufficiency, no doubt. I love the hungry looks my students get in their eyes when it suddenly clicks and they realize they can use the GMAT's traps against it. The Princess Bride routine I do as part of it? That helps, I'm sure, but it might just be to keep us all entertained.

What is your favorite problem from the Official Guide and why?
13th Ed, SC #133

I really like teaching Sentence Correction because it's the one place in Verbal where significant strides can be made by learning a few key grammatical concepts. This problem does its best to hide its classic 3/2 verb agreement split by switching up the continuous/non-continuous aspect (not a concept tested on the GMAT) in the verb decision point at the end of the underlining. Once you notice that split, it also does its best to hide the subject behind a raft of modifiers, but again a simple rule (the subject you're looking for won't be found in a modifier unless the verb is part of that same modifier) helps us get rid of tempting plural candidates nets, devices, and laws to find the correct singular subject compliance. From there it's relatively obvious.

So what I like is that this problem is very easy for someone who has mastered two of the key skills we teach: identifying the good decision points and identifying the proper subject for a verb. And yet for someone lacking those two skills it's fairly difficult. I find that while many students want to improve on Verbal, deep down they need to be sold on why they should relearn (or in many cases learn for the first time) basic grammar instead of just relying on their ears. And this problem does a good job of showing them.

Ethan turns the cold, pragmatic GMAT into a humorous foe
Ethan took me from a 610 to a 690. I have learned from Ethan both in a group and one-on-one setting, and in both he is phenomenal. If you want an instructor who adjusts based off of your learning style,  reinforces both the technical and strategic sides of the GMAT while keeping the material engaging, he's your man. Ethan turns the cold, pragmatic GMAT into a humorous foe by using examples from life and film. After working with Ethan, you won't be able to watch The Princess Bride without thinking of Data Sufficiency... and that's not a bad thing. I went from being nervous and self-questioning on my first test to relaxed, optimistic, and (I didn't expect to say this) EXCITED on my final test day.

Ethan was a phenomenal teacher.
Ethan was a phenomenal teacher.  He genuinely cares that you learn, and more importantly, retain the material.  Everything was very well structured and easy to follow.  I highly recommend this class to anyone looking for GMAT prep.

Ethan was amazing
Ethan was amazing, and made the material very digestible.  His strategies are working and I can tell that he has spent a lot of time thinking about incorporating his style with the material (very polished).

Which is your favorite lesson to teach?
My favorite lesson: Geometry.....I make it VERY interactive and I have the students 'teach the class'.

What do you love about teaching?
I love that moment when a student suddenly gets it.

What subject did you struggle with the most in school and how did you overcome it?
I hated Geography when I was younger.  It was the only class that I ever got a C in.  Freshman year in college, I took a class on Economic Development in the Third World, and in my first 10 days we had to learn every single country on the planet and be able to place it on the map.  I was a Freshman in a class of Seniors.  It was the only assignment I got an A on during that class, but I was so happy to have overcome my own fears of Geography and ace it.

He truly cared how we were progressing
Where was Kevin during my high school and college courses? He engaged the class 2 nights a week for 3 hours by creating personal relationships with each one of us. He truly cared how we were progressing in our knowledge of the lessons and helped us each individually during breaks if he noticed we were lost. Class was great.

He took an individualized approach to each lesson
I can't say enough good things about Veritas Prep ... and especially Kevin. He took an individualized approach to each lesson once he had gotten to know each student's strengths and weaknesses. He gave me specific study advice on breaks and before/after class that really helped me.

I raised my GMAT score by 120 points within a month!
I had Kevin Richardson as my tutor.  With his help, I raised my GMAT score by 120 points within a month!  I took the regular Veritas Prep course about 1.5 years ago, but did not take the GMAT right after the course.  After 1.5 years, my skills became rusty, and that resulted in a disappointing score.  Kevin helped me by analyzing my skill-set and pointing out my fortes and my weaknesses. He then customized his teaching methods per my needs and built up my confidence along the way.  After being burned by the low score, it was important to have Kevin providing me with tips for each section and helping me to regain my confidence.  His teaching is easy to understand and right to the point.  For anyone considering a GMAT tutoring service. I would definitely recommend Kevin.

Which is your favorite lesson to teach?
That one is easy. Arithmetic. Students often think that a lesson called “Arithmetic” will not even be worth their time, until we begin looking at the math from an entirely different perspective. Remember: the GMAT is a critical thinking test and not a math test. It is fun to watch the students’ expressions as we turn horrendous looking problems into simple, 20-second solutions, using a little bit of “mental gymnastics.”

What is your favorite quote?
The major work of the world is not done by geniuses. It is done by ordinary people, with balance in their lives, who have learned to work in an extraordinary manner.” (Gordon B. Hinckley) This quote certainly applies to how we approach the GMAT: it is not just super-geniuses who ace the GMAT. It takes a balanced, calculated approach – and it certainly takes work – but anybody can drastically improve their score.

What is your favorite Veritas Prep success story?
One of my students signed up for the Veritas Prep course, but he lived in Cedar City, UT – a distance of over 250 miles away. He made the commute to every class, studied hard, and ended up improving his GMAT score from a 430 to a 710 – a 280 point increase! He was always so appreciative. Several times throughout the class, he would pull me aside and say, “That was definitely worth the commute.”

Aaron was a great teacher.
Aaron was a great teacher. He knows great techniques that  will help you improve your GMAT score. Thanks to Veritas Prep and Aaron, I'm a second year MBA student at one of the nation’s top MBA programs  and already have a full time job offer for when I finish my second year. I recommend Veritas Prep and Aaron to all my friends.

I really could feel like he cared about each student
My teacher Aaron went out of his way and put in extra time and effort to make sure all my questions were answered. He took time in each class to make sure each student understood the concepts clearly and still moved at an appropriate pace.  I really could feel like he cared about each student, not just his contract with Veritas Prep.

I haven't seen an instructor as well prepared as he is.
Our instructor Aaron Pond is a great guy always concerned with each student in our individual needs. I haven't seen an instructor as well prepared as he is.
