What is your favorite Veritas Prep lesson to teach and why?
I really enjoy teaching Geometry. The topic comes naturally to me, but many students initially are intimidated by it. There is great satisfaction seeing them get comfortable with the material by the end of the lesson.

What is your favorite quote?
 “A smooth sea never made a skillful mariner, neither do uninterrupted prosperity and success qualify for usefulness and happiness. The storms of adversity, like those of the ocean, rouse the faculties, and excite the invention, prudence, skill and fortitude of the voyager. The martyrs of ancient times, in bracing their minds to outward calamities, acquired a loftiness of purpose and a moral heroism worth a lifetime of softness and security.”

I love this quote for two reasons. The first is that it reminds me of my time in Navy as a Submariner. The second is the truths it conveys about life and the challenges that inevitably cross our path.

What do you love about teaching?
Making a difference. Sometimes it's big, sometimes it's small. But in the end, you're always making a difference. And when you see your students achieve that success, you can't help but feel proud that you played a part in that process.

What is your favorite Veritas Prep success story?
The Chef! I learned on the first day of class that he was a high-school dropout who never went to college. So, I pulled him aside during a break and I told him that he would have to change his attitude if he wanted to achieve success with the GMAT. He was going to have to listen to me instead of those demons from his past. But if he could not do that, he should walk out right then and there. Fortunately, he said that he would try - which is all I could truly ask at that point. Over the following weeks, I motivated him to work hard and he succeeded... in a big way, ultimately scoring 760 and getting into INSEAD!

Apart from his great teaching style, he kept the class motivated.
I took some of these trials with other companies and I can say I was easily bored after 1 hour. But not on Ravi's class. Apart from his great teaching style, he kept the class motivated. He made me try harder on each question one after the other. He reached out to everyone in the class and made sure that we understood where we did wrong and what we could do to avoid mistakes and I think that was the most important thing. He made sure everyone was satisfied at the end of the class and the show up to the classes represented that. It was a very dynamic class with everyone helping each other out and some of us are still in touch, helping each other with GMAT problems.

Ravi makes the GMAT looks so much more approachable.
As an international student non-native speaker, I was having a hard time with the verbal session - more specifically with the Sentence Correction. But after taking Ravi's classes, Sentence Correction became my favorite topic in the Verbal session. It's amazing how Ravi makes the GMAT looks so much more approachable. The way he teaches and explains all the GMAT stuffs is spectacular.

Which is your favorite lesson to teach?
Data Sufficiency, no doubt. I love the hungry looks my students get in their eyes when it suddenly clicks and they realize they can use the GMAT's traps against it. The Princess Bride routine I do as part of it? That helps, I'm sure, but it might just be to keep us all entertained.

What is your favorite problem from the Official Guide and why?
13th Ed, SC #133

I really like teaching Sentence Correction because it's the one place in Verbal where significant strides can be made by learning a few key grammatical concepts. This problem does its best to hide its classic 3/2 verb agreement split by switching up the continuous/non-continuous aspect (not a concept tested on the GMAT) in the verb decision point at the end of the underlining. Once you notice that split, it also does its best to hide the subject behind a raft of modifiers, but again a simple rule (the subject you're looking for won't be found in a modifier unless the verb is part of that same modifier) helps us get rid of tempting plural candidates "nets," "devices," and "laws" to find the correct singular subject "compliance." From there it's relatively obvious.

So what I like is that this problem is very easy for someone who has mastered two of the key skills we teach: identifying the good decision points and identifying the proper subject for a verb. And yet for someone lacking those two skills it's fairly difficult. I find that while many students want to improve on Verbal, deep down they need to be sold on why they should relearn (or in many cases learn for the first time) basic grammar instead of just relying on their ears. And this problem does a good job of showing them.

Ethan turns the cold, pragmatic GMAT into a humorous foe
Ethan took me from a 610 to a 690. I have learned from Ethan both in a group and one-on-one setting, and in both he is phenomenal. If you want an instructor who adjusts based off of your learning style,  reinforces both the technical and strategic sides of the GMAT while keeping the material engaging, he's your man. Ethan turns the cold, pragmatic GMAT into a humorous foe by using examples from life and film. After working with Ethan, you won't be able to watch The Princess Bride without thinking of Data Sufficiency... and that's not a bad thing. I went from being nervous and self-questioning on my first test to relaxed, optimistic, and (I didn't expect to say this) EXCITED on my final test day.

What is your favorite quote?
My favorite quote is one by Benjamin Franklin on education: "Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." The entire Veritas Prep curriculum has been developed around the concept of Learning by Doing, and this quote captures exactly why we have done that. Rote memorization and rote learning are not effective approaches in education, and this is especially true when preparing for a reasoning and problem solving based test such as the GMAT.

What is your proudest accomplishment?
My proudest life accomplishment remains the first time I climbed El Capitan in Yosemite Valley. Although I had already been an active rock-climber while in high school on the coast of Maine, I was not prepared for the intimidating scale of Yosemite's huge granite walls when I moved to California to attend Stanford.  The first time I climbed there, I stood at the base of El Cap and thought I would never in my life climb this amazing piece of rock. One year later, after 4 days on the wall, I pulled onto the summit of El Cap, exhausted and elated; even though I have gone on to do many harder and more committing climbs, nothing will ever compare to the sense of accomplishment I felt that day.

Chris is a master of the GMAT material
My instructor, Chris Kane, was outstanding and helped me understand the different types of questions that the GMAT will use and the best ways to conquer these questions. I also did individual tutoring sessions with Chris and would highly recommend him. Chris knows how to teach complex subject matter to students. What is your favorite lesson to teach?
My favorite lesson to teach is data sufficiency. Everyone learns something in data sufficiency! Everyone has that “aha moment” that I love. Some people come to the lesson with a big fear of data sufficiency and I am able to give them the tools to build their confidence. Some people come in thinking that they know everything about data sufficiency and are shocked by how much they actually learn during that lesson. It really is a metaphor for all of the other sections of the GMAT, it is not just what you know, it is how you play the game and data sufficiency is all about learning to play the game. What can be more fun than that? 

If you were not teaching the GMAT what would you be teaching instead?
If I were not teaching the GMAT I would be a coach. In fact I think of what I do for Veritas Prep as coaching. Like a sports coach or a vocal coach, or even a life coach, a GMAT coach is doing more than conveying content. The students that I work with need more than knowledge, they need to be able to perform to the best of their abilities on test day and it is my pleasure to help them do it!

Could I have scored 700+ without David? Probably not
I paid for 28 hours of online tutoring with Veritas Prep. I was assigned David Newland as my instructor. It was the best money I could have spent. Within six weeks of working with David, I scored 770 and 760 on the GMAT Prep Software PP1 and PP2 tests. On the real exam I scored 700 (90%), comprising Quant 47 (73%) and Verbal 39 (88%). The drop between the PP tests and the real test was mostly due to nerves and bad time management on the day. Could I have scored 700+ without David? Probably not given I only had six weeks to prepare. David was excellent. With 8+ years of GMAT experience he knows how to solve every question the test can throw at you. He explained methodology in a clear and easy to apply fashion. He was also flexible and we could frequently schedule sessions on short notice.

This guy is smart and really knows the GMAT inside and out
Got so lucky to get David Newland as my instructor. I went into the course more confident in quant, and David is a verbal expert, specifically in Critical Reasoning. This guy is smart and really knows the GMAT inside and out, which was helpful since I had never taken the exam before. I could hear his voice inside my head as I did practice problems and during the actual GMAT.

The instructor David was excellent. I found that he took the time to explain each section properly and in easy to understand language. I very much enjoyed this course and would recommend it to any one with a very hectic schedule.

Which character would do best on the GMAT:  Larry David from Curb Your Enthusiasm.  The way he notices little things, fixates on them, and won’t let them go – he’d be a master of Data Sufficiency.  “Why is this word problem about bags of sugar and not just sugar?  Why wouldn’t they just say sugar?  Why the bags?  Ohh…it has to be an integer.  Got you, GMAT. Pretty, pretty, pretty good trick you tried to get me with…”

Favorite Veritas Prep Success Story:  I had a guy – Jason White, but not the Heisman winner - take one of our old weekend crash courses and he came in having just scored a 490 on the official test two days prior, and already had his next test scheduled for that coming Tuesday (back then you could take the test once per calendar month, not once per 30 days).  He told me “I need a 700…let’s get there” and I was skeptical, but he really took all of our lessons to heart – I’d highlight a trap answer and why you might pick it and he’d look up and say “I made that same mistake twice”…that kind of thing.  He made a ton of progress but I was still nervous for him.  Two days later I get the call and I was nervous to even take it knowing how hard it is to get from the 4s to the 7s in general, let alone that quickly.  He had hit 710, and the funniest thing was that I was much more surprised and excited.  Business as usual for him, but for me – 220 points in less than a week? That’s when I knew the stuff we were teaching was working.

Proudest accomplishment: Qualifying for the Boston Marathon.  It’s so much hard work to get in that kind of shape but then you also have to deliver on race day – you have to pace yourself, you have to stick to your plan, you have to push through pain and fatigue and stay upbeat and focused over all that distance.  And all that really matters when you’re gunning for a BQ is that final number – did you make the cut or not?  I like thinking back to that experience when I’m teaching because it’s pretty similar to what students with 700+ ambitions are going through.  Nerves, fatigue, uncertainty, but you have to keep a sense of optimism.  Having gone through that helps me relate to stressed-out students…particularly those who are trying to “qualify for Boston” (Harvard or MIT-Sloan, maybe) themselves.

Brian Galvin is AMAZING; knows his material in and out
Can I say amazing? Of course, I had the honor of being taught by Brian Galvin and Matt Douglas. I say "honor", because Brian Galvin is AMAZING; knows his material in and out, has clear cut methodologies of explaining them (even to idiots like me), engaging enough that I didn't fizzle out through the 9 hr session, but also didn't pace too quickly or too slowly. While grueling and jam-packed with info, it was probably the best investment I've made thus far in this whole GMAT process. The take-aways from the class were so valuable and added another dimension to the weekly Veritas course I'm taking.  I highly recommend the 2 day boot camp, but more so recommend taking the course specifically with Brian Galvin.

He's patient and just really good at his job.
Brian is wonderful. Some people do this just for money, Brian is genuinely interested in the success of his students. He's patient and just really good at his job. Brian is super smart, patient, will address each person's concerns and make sure we are always comfortable before moving on. It's a course 7-10pm after a long day of work, he makes the experience as pleasant as possible. He's also very sociable, talks to us before class or during break. You can tell he's a seasoned teacher and really enjoys teaching.
