Can someone explain the answer from the back of the book? It simply says (1) and (2) imply that X=2 but doesn't provide the logic behind this claim. It isn't obvious to me why this is the case.

from (1)

(x - 2)(x - 1) = 0, so x = 2 or x = 1

from (2)

(x - 2)(x + 1) = 0 , so x = 2 or x = - 1

since x = 2 is common to both, x = 2 and (1) and (2) together are sufficient.
