I would rather choose (D) as my answer since this choice makes the subject (i.e. Holmes) undergo two actions (i.e. "was a spiritualist" and "was affected in both"), and this would still be considered grammatically parallel in form. Could you please explain why answer choice (D) is incorrect and indicate what is at issue here?

The reason D is incorrect is because the book did not reveal "this creator," but rather reveals that the creator "was an enthusiast." Choice D marries "this creator" as the direct object of the verb "reveal" instead of it's intended object of the creator being an enthusiast.
