I am wondering how desirable my profile would be to a top MBA program given my background.

I went to a pretty unrecognizable state school in IL where I majored in English/minored in Political Science but was able to earn a 3.9 GPA. I have not had a fancy financial/consulting type job, but rather have worked at an insurance company in a leadership, although not management, role. I have scored 700 on my GMAT, and will hopefully have strong essays and letter of recommendations.

Due to my lack of, literally, any formal business education and mediocre on appearance work experience, could somebody tell me whether my basic profile is one that would be desirable at a top 25 business school? I am looking to apply for entrance in Fall 2010.

Thank you.

Your strong GPA and GMAT score are definitely assets. Not everyone who applies to business school has a strong business background. The key is to demonstrate that you progressed in your field (either via promotions or increased responsibility), have a clear idea of how an MBA fits into your future plans, and can show what you can contribute to an MBA class. The application essays and interview will provide opportunities for you to communicate your unique attributes. Though your insurance background may not be glamorous, you can still pull from your experiences to demonstrate why/how you are a strong candidate.
