Hi, I'd appreciate it if you could give me a sense of whether I'd have a good chance at top tier schools (including London).

Age: 27
Background: Chinese born Australian
GMAT: 680 (40 Verbal, 43 Quant. I scored high 40s in practice quants but panicked in the exam. Will do it again with the benefit of experience and I expect to at least hit 700).
Undergrad: Marketing/Finance double major. GPA-wise, not sure what the conversion is but perhaps around 3.1, based on a crude online estimation.

Experiences
* Scholarship student at university, which included three different six month full-time marketing internships with well known MNCs. This contributed to my average overall GPA (I focused on marketing and let finance slide somewhat)
* Participated in numerous extracurriculars at university, including a summer semester at a Global Leadership Program in Eastern Europe (do these matter? Uni was a long time ago)
* Four years with an oil and gas major, which included several marketing roles as well as M&A project manager for an acquisition of a competitor business.
* Recently spent three months as a volunteer consultant in a third world country, where I developed a marketing strategy for a local business trade organisation and also worked alongside a local woman setting up an NGO for female handicraft producers.

Apart from this, my community involvement during my work life has been rather non-existent (not much work/life balance).

I read some of the other profiles and feel like I should go climb Everest before I can even think about competing for a place at a top tier school. Should I lower my expectations? Thanks.

Hi natty,

You definitely don't need to scale Everest before you apply, but there are a few things you might be able to do to boost your chances. The biggest: Your GPA is definitely low compared to the averages at the top schools. Taking a couple of online or extension school courses now (and earning A's) can help.

I happen to think that you have some potentially great-sounding community involvement already. I'm more interested in what kind of experiences you've had at work -- times you can point to when you led a team, made something happen that was outside of your job description, made the right choice ethically when no one else was looking, etc. These will be very important to your application story.

If you want more help, give us a call (800-925-7737 or 310-456-8716) and we'll get you set up with an admissions expert for a free chat!

Scott
