I recently asked a former supervisor to write a Letter of Recomendation for me. He told me he would be happy to write one, but also asked what exactly should he include. I thought this was a good question. What should the letter include besides the obvious, contrived same 'ol same 'ol?

Thanks

This is an excellent question. The Letter of Recommendation should include a brief statement of how the recommender knows you (e.g., the nature of your relationship), how long they have known you in that capacity and anything else the recommender can say that might shed light on your ability to perform, as compared to other individuals, at the institution. The recommender can also feel free to include anecdotes or specific examples of your performance that will be illustrative to the committee. If the recommender is an alumni or has any other connection to the institution, he or she should indicate that as well. Best of luck!

My experience has always been to make sure that the LOR matches your application story. The previous comment is dead on with regards to the flavor and details of how the letter should be written, but the biggest thing is to ensure that the main themes are echoed. If you have a low GPA and work really hard in your essays to showcase your ability to focus and display maturity (to offset the fear that you are a slacker), you don't want your letters of rec to miss that theme entirely. The best thing to do is give your recommender a copy of your essays - if they aren't done, provide outlines. If you aren't even to the outline stage, at least give them some bullets about what you hope to accomplish throughout your application. Because letters of recommendation must be initiated early, it is a good reason to seek consulting services or some other type of counsel early in the process so that you can get these themes properly identified.
