I am having trouble understanding the conclusion: "If the popularity of a musical scale were a result of social conditioning, we would wxpect, given THE DIVERSITY OF SOCIAL SYSTEMS??, a diverse mixture of diatonic and non-diatonic scales in the world music"

What is the best approach when you have a convoluted long phrases that you don't understand even though you read it more than 3 times?

Thank you!

The conclusion is actually the last sentence of the stimulus. The sentence to which you refer (a premise) is long and confusion. It might be helpful to re-write it keeping only the essential words. You may also want to use circles and arrows to delinitate key parts of it.
