Is x + y <1 ?

1) x < 8/9

2) y < 1/8


ans is E. But i chose c because i thought the answer would always be neg or less than 1
what is the quickest way to solve this?

We can actually add these two inequalities together, in the same way that we would add two equations.

x < 8/9
y < 1/8
=========
x+y < 8/9 + 1/8
x+y < 64/72 + 9/72
x + y < 73/72

Since 1 is in this range, we choose answer E.
