 Post subject: Example problem on p. 13, Algebra book

If (5-x)^4=81, then x=2 or 8

How would you work this problem out? Since 81=3^4, would you then solve for -(5-x) and (5-x) to arrive at x=2 and x=8?

(5-x)^4 = 81


3^4 = 81

and

(-3)^4 = 81

so 5 -x = 3; x = 2

or

5 - x = - 3; x = 8
