Per Veritas explanation of the answer in the back of the book: I do not understand how after Shawn boards bus 1 he is either downtown at 2 mins past the hour or 32 mins past the hour. The original question states that the the bus leaves evry half hour starting at 20 mins or 50 mins past the hour. The question states that he must be on bus 1 for at least an 1and 1/5 hrs which is an 1hr and 20 mins. If he gets on the 7:20 am bust that will get him downtown at 8:40 am. I don't understand your reasoning of 2mins and 32 mins past the hour. Please explain the solution in detail.

1/5 of an hour is 12 minutes. (I think you may have calculated it as 20 minutes)
So, if he gets on a bus at 7:20 and he stays on it for 1 hour and 12 minutes, he arrives at 8:32.

Hope this helps,

Okay I understand how you arrived at 8:32 but where does the 2 mins past the hour come from? The solution states that if he boards Bus 1 at 20 mins past the hour or 50 mins past the hour that he would arrive downtown at either 2 mins past the hour which infers that he caught the 7:20 bus and 50 mins past the hour, which was not explained in the calculation since we're taking the shortest amount of wait time. If the question states that he has to stay on the bus for an 1hr and 12 min and he took the 7:20 bus then he will get there at 8:32 but the solution has the earliest arrival time at 8:02 or 2 mins past the hour. Please explain. Thanks!

if he boards at 50 minutes past the hour and is on the bus for 1:12, he'd get off the bus at 2 minutes past the hour ... 7:50 + 1:12 = 9:02

if he boards at 20 minutes past the hour and is on the bus for 1:12, he'd get off the bus at 32 minutes past the hour ... 7:20 + 1:12 = 9:32
