 Post subject: Algebra (Vol. IV), Question #91.

This data sufficiency question asks the following: "If x and y are integers and y = |x + 3| + |4 - x|, does y equal 7?"

(1) x < 4
(2) x > -3

I chose answer E, because I thought both answers were not sufficient. However, the correct answer was choice C. I'm having trouble understanding the relationship between two statements and how these statements are sufficient to answer the question. I'd appreciate your response :lol:.

This is my understanding:

if -3 < x < 4, x+3 is always positive no matter whether the absolute sign is exist,and 4-x is always positive no matter whether the absolute sign is exist.

Since |x + 3| + |4 - x| equals x+3+4-x, the result is 7.
