ROn Point: How Carly Rae Jepson Can Help Your GMAT Score

Have you ever been on the exam and the question is asking you something that you know well but can’t remember the details at that crucial moment? This happens to all of us at one time or another, and sometimes it helps to have a catchphrase or keyword to help recall the concept in our mind. Since certain things are easier to remember than others, it helps to associate a difficult concept with something you’re less likely to forget, such as the lyrics to your favorite song.

With that in mind, DJ Data Sufficiency, an occasional contributor to this blog, presents his version of one of catchiest songs from the past year. With a little bit of preparation, this song can be associated with a couple of difficult concepts to help you create strong bonds in your memory that can be harnessed during the exam. If that doesn’t do the trick, you can always try to look at the question and know that it’s asking you to Solve Me, Maybe.

I thought I knew quant so well
In verbal I never fell
Today I don’t feel so swell
GMAT is in my way

I’d trade my soul for a wish
Lifeline or two on this quiz
I didn’t know about this
GMAT is in my way

The time is tickin’
Question got me head scratchin’
Five choices got me weighin’
How am I going to solve this quickly?

Hey, I just learned this,
The concept’s hazy,
I stare at paper,
So solve me, maybe?

It’s hard to get right
The choices sway me,
I stare at paper,
So solve me, maybe?

Hey, I just learned this,
The concept’s hazy,
I stare at paper,
So solve me, maybe?

And I can get this right
The choices sway me,
I stare at paper,
So solve me, maybe?

I learned this once I recall
Yesterday I knew it all
My back’s up against the wall
GMAT is in my way

Now my nerves feel like steel
The author’s words do reveal
A trap they tried to conceal
GMAT’s going my way

The time is tickin’
But I’m no longer scramblin’
One choice to be choosin’
Now I’m going to solve this quickly!

Hey, I just learned this,
The concept’s hazy,
I stare at paper,
So solve me, maybe?

It’s hard to get right
The choices sway me,
I stare at paper,
So solve me, maybe?

Hey, I just learned this,
The concept’s hazy,
I stare at paper,
So solve me, maybe?

And I can get this right
The choices sway me,
I stare at paper,
So solve me, maybe?

Before this concept came to my life
I missed them so bad
I missed them so bad
I missed them so, so bad

Before this concept came to my life
I missed them so bad
And I should have known them
I missed them so, so bad

I just learned this,
The concept’s hazy,
I stare at paper,
So solve me, maybe?

Hey, It’s hard to get right
I feel so lazy,
I stare at paper,
So solve me, maybe?

And I can get this right
The choices sway me,
I stare at paper,
So solve me, maybe?

Before this concept came to my life
I missed them so bad
I missed them so bad
I missed them so, so bad

Before this concept came to my life
I missed them so bad
And I should have known them
So solve me, maybe?

If you have access to the song, it’s worth listening to while reading the lyrics to reinforce the association of this song with a GMAT concept that is crucial but perhaps tends to slip your mind. On top of associating popular songs with seminal GMAT concepts, listening to something familiar helps jog your implicit memory, the way you can’t help singing along to your favorite songs without having to consciously think of the words. On test day, If you find yourself staring at paper, or thinking the concept is hazy, it often helps to concentrate on the concept you learned in prep and solve the question, maybe.
